Lebogang Maile, the Gauteng MEC of economic development, agriculture and rural development visited the community of Soshanguve to hand out title deeds and give solutions to the grievances of the residents. The public meeting was held at NAFCOC auditorium on Wednesday.

Maile announced the holders of the title deeds while handing them out. Flora Mawela (70), a holder of her title deed said she had been waiting for her title deed for a long time.

“I thought I will die before receiving my title deed, I am an old woman and I cannot be doing ups and downs searching for my title deed.”

Maile highlighted that 100 000 title deeds were given to the Tshwane municipality. “we gave out title deeds to the municipalities a long time ago.” He also said municipalities withheld the title deeds probably because they want the mayor to give them out.

Welcome Majaja, a resident of soshanguve said he was disappointed with the way the MEC handled the title deed issue. “we all have been waiting for title deeds, but only the old people got them.”

“I have been waiting for a title deed for ten years, maybe the government is only doing this for the elderly because the elections are approaching.”

The MEC reaffirmed that the government remained committed to the resolution of the challenge of title deeds, “we don’t want the current situation where many townships are not proclaimed and some beneficiaries of houses cannot be found.”
He also stated that the Provincial Department of Human Settlements has appointed a law practitioner(advocate) and a unite responsible for pipeline planning, aimed at speeding up the process of title deeds being handed over to rightful owners on time.
Residents were also invited to share their concerns and comments about the work of the government. A lot of issues were raised by the residents including poor economic development employment and safety in schools.
Maile reassured the residents that the Provincial government engages with other spheres of government and consults regularly with communities on matters relating to service delivery.
Councillor of ward 25, Phumzile Hlatshwayo urged residents to be patient as the government is working on solving their problems.
Morris Mashamaite, a resident of Soshanguve said he was happy with the way the MEC handled things. “The whole purpose of this meeting was for the MEC to hand out title deeds and give solutions to the problems of the residents and he did that.”
